Huat ah! Enjoy this beautiful, auspicious dish, known as raw fish salad or yusheng, with your family and bring prosperity into your home. Toss it as high as possible as it is believed that one will have more prosperity the higher one tosses the salad!

Let's start cooking!

Sliced radish and carrots

Step 1 - Soak radish and carrots

  • In separate bowls, cover finely shredded radish and carrots with cold water and set aside
Cooked plum sauce

Step 2 - Mix and cook the plum sauce

  • To make the dressing, mix 140 g plum sauce and ½ cup water together.

  • Heat oil over low heat and add the plum sauce mixture, ¼ cup sugar and a pinch of salt. Cook until sugar dissolves, then set aside.

Honey can be substituted for this
Marinated salmon

Step 3 - Marinate the salmon

  • Mix 1 tsp vegetable oil, 1 tsp sesame oil, ¼ tsp sugar,  ⅛ tsp white pepper,  ⅛ tsp five-spice powder, juice of 1 lemon and a pinch of salt together in a bowl.

  • Add salmon slices and mix. Set aside

Step 4 - Drain and arrange the vegetables

  • Rinse the carrots and daikon and squeeze out excess water, then set aside.

  • Arrange the daikon, carrot, red bell pepper, ginger, sweet pickled ginger, and coriander in a circle on a large platter.

Step 5 - Start the ritual

  • Yee sang has traditional sayings that go along with finishing the dish, and should be done in order and poured over the platter in a circular motion.

  • a. Fish –年年有余(nián nián yǒu yú)

  • b. Kaffir lime leaves/lime wedges to squeeze –大吉大利(dà jí dà lì)

  • c. Five-spice powder –招财进宝(zhāo cái jìn bǎo)

  • d. Oil 一本万利(yī běn wàn lì) or 财源广进(cái yuán guǎng jìn)

  • e. Crushed peanuts –金银满屋(jīn yín mǎn wū)

  • f. Sesame seeds –生意兴隆(shēng yì xīnglóng)

  • g. Plum sauce/honey –甜甜蜜蜜(tián tián mì mì)

  • h. Golden crackers –满地黄金(mǎn dì huáng jīn)
